A few tips riding scooters in Nusa Penida

A lot of people come over and immediately rent scooters in Nusa Penida. Some have experience riding them others do not. Here are a few tips that will make your trip safer and avoid any accidents in Nusa Penida.

1. Do not go fast or over 30-35 kph. This is an island and don’t be in a hurry to get anywhere. Do it on island time.
2. Because there are so many potholes in all the roads going to fast you will not see them in time and you will hit them. Some are so deep you will fall off your scooter.
3. Always look forward. Do not look back. The people behind you will not hit you. You need to make sure that you don’t hit anyone but more importantly keep your eyes on the road so you can see the potholes and the dangers ahead. I.E. there are a lot of dogs that just sit or stand on the roads.
4. Do not try to overtake a van or truck. This is not in your interest as you cannot see what is coming the other way, the roads are so narrow that if the truck or van does not see you, you will end up in a ditch.
5. There are a lot of blind corners on the island. When traveling on the roads always stick to the left of the road. You can hoot your horn to warn others that you are coming around the corner. If you stay in the middle around the corner there is a high chance you will get hit by any van or truck coming towards you.
6. Vans are not your friend. They do not care about scooters. Especially foreigners riding scooters. They will take up as much of the road as they like.
7. Most (90%) of the van drivers do not have licenses. Most do not have insurance on their vans. If they hit you they will not stop to help you. They will run away as fast as they can. The reason for this is that they are liable to have to make a payment to those they injure. They also do not want the police involved with them as for the reasons above.
8. There are some very rough roads at the end of your trips to the special sites on the island. Just take your time and go slow on them.
